RESUMO

The rational design of morphology and heterogeneous interfaces for non-precious metal electrocatalysts is crucial in electrochemical water decomposition. In this paper, a bifunctional electrocatalyst (Ni/NiFe LDH), which coupling nickel with nickel-iron layer double hydroxide (NiFe LDH), is synthesized on carbon cloth. At current density of 10 mA cm-2, the Ni/NiFe LDH exhibits a low hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) overpotential of only 36 mV due to the accelerated electrolyte penetration, which is caused by superhydrophilic interface. Moreover, an alkaline electrolyzer is formed and provide a current density of 10 mA cm-2 with a voltage of only 1.49 V. It is confirmed by the density functional theory (DFT) that electron from the Ni layer is transferred to NiFe LDH layer, redistributing the local electron density around the heterogeneous phase interface. Thus, the Gibbs free energy for hydrogen adsorption is optimized. This work provides a promising strategy for the rational regulation of electrons at heterogeneous interfaces and the synthesis of flexible electrocatalysts.

Malignant invasive Erigeron canadensis, as a typical lignocellulosic biomass, is a formidable challenge for sustainable and efficient resource utilization, however nanobubble water (NBW) coupled with anaerobic digestion furnishes a prospective strategy with superior environmental and economic effectiveness. In this study, influence mechanism of various O2-NBW addition times on methanogenic performance of E. canadensis during anaerobic digestion were performed to achieve the optimal pollution-free energy conversion. Results showed that supplementation of O2-NBW in digestion system could significantly enhance the methane production by 10.70-16.17%, while the maximum cumulative methane production reached 343.18 mL g-1 VS in the case of one-time O2-NBW addition on day 0. Furthermore, addition of O2-NBW was conducive to an increase of 2-90% in the activities of dehydrogenase, α-glucosidase and coenzyme F420. Simultaneously, both facultative bacteria and methanogenic archaea were enriched as well, further indicating that O2-NBW might be responsible for facilitating hydrolytic acidification and methanogenesis. Based on Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) cluster analysis, provision of O2-NBW enhanced the metabolism of carbohydrate and amino acid, translation as well as membrane transport of bacteria and archaea. This study might offer the theoretical guidance and novel insights for efficient recovery of energy from lignocellulosic biomass on account of O2-NBW adhibition in anaerobic digestion system, progressing tenor of carbon-neutral vision.

Two kinds of Fe2O3-modified digestate-derived biochar (BC) were prepared and their effects on anaerobic digestion (AD) of kitchen waste (40.0 g VS/L) were investigated, with BC and Fe2O3 addition used as a comparison. The results showed that Fe2O3-modified BC (Fe2O3-BC1 prepared by co-precipitation and Fe2O3-BC2 by impregnation) significantly increased methane yield (20.8 % and 16.4 %, respectively) and reduced volatile fatty acid concentration (35.6 % and 29.6 %, respectively). Microbial high-throughput analysis revealed that Fe2O3-modified BC selectively enriched Clostridium (47.3 %) and Methanosarcina (72.2 %), suggesting that direct interspecies electron transfer contributing to improved biogas production performance was established and enhanced. Correlation analysis indicated that biogas production performance was improved by the larger specific surface area (83.4 m2/g), pore volume (0.101 cm3/g), and iron content (97.4 g/Kg) of the BC. These results offer insights for enhancing the efficacy of AD processes using Fe2O3-modified BCs as additives.

BACKGROUND: Young adult cancer survivors face medical financial hardships that may lead to delaying or forgoing medical care. This study describes the medical financial difficulties young adult cancer survivors in the United States experience in the post-Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act period. METHOD: We identified 1009 cancer survivors aged 18 to 39 years from the National Health Interview Survey (2015-2022) and matched 963 (95%) cancer survivors to 2733 control individuals using nearest-neighbor matching. We used conditional logistic regression to examine the association between cancer history and medical financial hardship and to assess whether this association varied by age, sex, race and ethnicity, and region of residence. RESULTS: Compared with those who did not have a history of cancer, young adult cancer survivors were more likely to report material financial hardship (22.8% vs 15.2%; odds ratio = 1.65, 95% confidence interval = 1.50 to 1.81) and behavior-related financial hardship (34.3% vs 24.4%; odds ratio = 1.62, 95% confidence interval = 1.49 to 1.76) but not psychological financial hardship (52.6% vs 50.9%; odds ratio = 1.07, 95% confidence interval = 0.99 to 1.16). Young adult cancer survivors who were Hispanic or lived in the Midwest and South were more likely to report psychological financial hardship than their counterparts. CONCLUSIONS: We found that young adult cancer survivors were more likely to experience material and behavior-related financial hardship than young adults without a history of cancer. We also identified specific subgroups of young adult cancer survivors that may benefit from targeted policies and interventions to alleviate medical financial hardship.

Ticks are important vectors of zoonotic diseases and play a major role in the circulation and transmission of many rickettsial species. The aim of this study was to investigate the carriage of Candidatus Rickettsia tarasevichiae (CRT) in a total of 1168 ticks collected in Inner Mongolia to elucidate the potential public health risk of this pathogen, provide a basis for infectious disease prevention, control and prediction and contribute diagnostic ideas for clinical diseases that present with fever in populations exposed to ticks. A total of four tick species, Haemaphysalis concinna (n = 21), Dermacentor nuttalli (n = 122), Hyalomma marginatum (n = 148), and Ixodes persulcatus (n = 877), were collected at nine sampling sites in Inner Mongolia, China, and identified by morphological and molecular biological methods. Reverse transcription PCR targeting the 16S ribosomal RNA (rrs), gltA, groEL, ompB and Sca4 genes was used to detect CRT DNA. Sequencing was used for pathogen species confirmation. The molecular epidemiological analysis showed that three species of ticks were infected with CRT, and the overall positive rate was as high as 42%. The positive rate of I. persulcatus collected in Hinggan League city was up to 96%, and that of I. persulcatus collected in Hulun Buir city was 50%. The pool positive rates of D. nuttalli and H. marginatum collected in Bayan Nur city and H. concinna collected in Hulun Buir city were 0%, 28% and 40%, respectively. This study revealed the high prevalence of CRT infection in ticks from Inner Mongolia and the first confirmation of CRT detected in H. marginatum in China. The wide host range and high infection rate in Inner Mongolia may dramatically increase the exposure of CRT to humans and other vertebrates. The role of H. marginatum in the transmission of rickettsiosis and its potential risk to public health should be further considered.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the prenatal ultrasonographic diagnosis and prognosis of fetuses with isolated filar cysts (FCs). Methods: The ultrasonographic features, reasons for missed diagnosis, and prognosis of eight isolated FCs diagnosed using ultrasound were analyzed retrospectively through follow-up. Results: Eight isolated FCs showed round or fusiform cystic anechoic areas at the end of the conus medullaris. Among them, six cases were prenatally diagnosed and the other two cases were diagnosed after birth. Of the six cases diagnosed prenatally, four (66.7%) disappeared during pregnancy, and the shortest time to disappearance was 1 month after the first diagnosis. All patients were followed up without any clinical symptoms or functional abnormalities. Conclusion: Isolated FCs may exhibit physiological variations that disappear spontaneously during pregnancy and usually have no clinical symptoms. They are usually benign and have a good prognosis. Ultrasonography is helpful for the diagnosis and follow-up of FCs.

In August 2022, Chengdu and Chongqing showed significant differences in ozone (O3) pollution. Chengdu had O3 pollution days for 20 days, whereas Chongqing had no O3 pollution days. In this study, we analyzed the influencing factors of this difference from the emission level of precursors and meteorological conditions. The results showed that:① the total mixing ratio of 52 VOCs (volatile organic compounds) (including 26 alkanes, 16 aromatics, and 10 alkenes) in Chengdu (18.8×10-9) was 2.8 times that of Chongqing (6.6×10-9), and the total O3 formation potential (OFP) (51.2×10-9) was 2.0 times that of Chongqing (25.0×10-9). The·OH radical loss rate (L·OH) (3.9 s-1) was 1.7 times that of Chongqing (2.3 s-1). The top three OFP in Chengdu were ethylene, m/p-xylene, and isoprene, and those in Chongqing were isoprene, ethylene, and propylene. The contribution rate of alkenes to O3 in Chongqing was 60.7%, whereas the OFP of alkenes and aromatics in Chengdu were 1.6 times and 2.9 times that in Chongqing. In conclusion, the total mixing ratio of VOCs, atmospheric photochemical activity, and O3 formation potential of Chengdu were higher than those of Chongqing. ② Isoprene was ranked first place in L·OH in both Chengdu and Chongqing, indicating that the contribution of biogenic sources to O3 pollution in August was significant. However, the biogenic source emission activity was in response to temperature. From August 14 to 24, the high temperature in Chongqing (38.3℃) decreased biogenic source emission activity, whereas the temperature in Chengdu (34.9℃) increased the biogenic sources emission activity. ③ The horizontal and vertical atmospheric diffusion conditions of Chongqing were better than those of Chengdu, and Chengdu was affected by regional pollution transmission.

This study focused on the impacts of heterogeneous Fenton-like pretreatment on the humification and bacterial community during co-composting of wheat straw with cattle dung covered with a semi-permeable membrane. In this study, FeOCl and low concentration of H2O2 were used for pretreatment and composting, which lasted for 39 days. The results showed that the pretreatment promoted the humification process, with degree of polymerization and percentage of humic acid increasing by 53.2 % and 7.3 %, respectively. Furthermore, the diversity and structure of bacterial communities were altered by pretreatment. During the thermophilic phase, pretreatment considerably promoted the metabolism of carbohydrate. According to redundancy analysis, C/N, moisture and organic matter were the key environmental factors that dominated the microbial community. In summary, heterogeneous Fenton-like pretreatment provided a novel idea for improving the humic acid content and maturity of the compost pile.

Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) is a common cancer associated with poor prognosis, and cudraflavone C (Cud C) is a natural flavonol with reported anti-CRC capacity. However, the precise mechanisms underlying the anti-CRC effect require further demonstration. The aim of present study was to evaluate the impact of Cud C on the cell viability and apoptosis of CRC cells and to determine the underlying mechanisms. The Human Protein Atlas (THPA) and Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA) databases were used to analyze the expression status of glutathione peroxidase 2 (GPX2) in CRC. Cell viability was examined using cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay. Flow cytometry was utilized to evaluate apoptosis. The levels of gene transcription and protein expression of GPX2, caspase-3, cleaved caspase-3), ß-catenin, and c-Myc were determined by RT-qPCR and Western blotting. Our results showed that GPX2 was overexpressed in CRC as compared to normal tissue and the extent of GPX2 overexpression is greatest in CRC when compared with other cancers according to GEPIA and THPA databases. GPX2 knockdown significantly suppressed the cell viability, induced apoptosis of CRC cell lines, and restrained the activity of Wnt/ß-catenin pathway. Cud C treatment decreased cell viability, induced apoptosis in CRC cell lines, and diminished the expression level of GPX2-dependent activation of Wnt/ß-catenin pathway, while such effects can be abolished by GPX2 overexpression. In conclusion, Cud C suppressed GPX2-dependent Wnt/ß-catenin pathway to exert anti-CRC function.

Ticks can carry multiple pathogens, and Inner Mongolia's animal husbandry provides excellent environmental conditions for ticks. This study characterized the microbiome of ticks from different geographical locations in Inner Mongolia; 905 Dermacentor nuttalli and 36 Ixodes persulcatus were collected from sheep in three main pasture areas and from bushes within the forested area. Mixed DNA samples were prepared from three specimens from each region and tick species. Microbial diversity was analyzed by 16S rRNA sequencing, and α and ß diversity were determined. The predominant bacterial genera were Rickettsia (54.60%), including Rickettsiales bacterium Ac37b (19.33%) and other Rickettsia (35.27%), Arsenophonus (11.21%), Candidatus Lariskella (10.84%), and Acinetobacter (7.17%). Rickettsia bellii was identified in I. persulcatus, while Rickettsiales bacterium Ac37b was found in D. nuttalli from Ordos and Chifeng. Potential Rickettsia and Anaplasma coinfections were observed in the Ordos region. Tick microbial diversity analysis in Inner Mongolia suggests that sheep at the sampling sites were exposed to multiple pathogens.


Title: Diversité microbienne des tiques et nouvelle espèce de Rickettsia du groupe du typhus (bactérie Rickettsiales Ac37b) en Mongolie intérieure, Chine. Abstract: Les tiques peuvent être porteuses de plusieurs agents pathogènes et l'élevage en Mongolie intérieure offre d'excellentes conditions environnementales pour les tiques. Cette étude a caractérisé le microbiome des tiques de différentes zones géographiques de Mongolie intérieure; 905 Dermacentor nuttalli et 36 Ixodes persulcatus ont été collectés sur des moutons dans trois principales zones de pâturage et dans des buissons de la zone forestière. Les genres bactériens prédominants étaient les Rickettsia (54,60 %), dont la bactérie Rickettsiales Ac37b (19,33 %) et d'autres Rickettsia (35,27 %), Arsenophonus (11,21 %), Candidatus Lariskella (10,84 %) et Acinetobacter (7,17 %). Rickettsia bellii a été identifiée chez I. persulcatus, tandis que la bactérie Rickettsiales Ac37b a été trouvée chez D. nuttalli d'Ordos et Chifeng. Des co-infections potentielles à Rickettsia et Anaplasma ont été observées dans la région d'Ordos. L'analyse de la diversité microbienne des tiques en Mongolie intérieure montre que les moutons présents sur les sites d'échantillonnage sont exposés à plusieurs agents pathogènes.

Nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) is still one of the hot catalysts for electrochemical water decomposition applications, despite its drawbacks, such as intrinsic activity and poor stability. In this work, the NiFe LDH-D1 electrocatalyst with cationic vacancies is successfully prepared by alkaline etching of Zn ion-doped NiFe LDH. The tightly arranged flocculated nanosheet structure on its surface provided a large active area. The cationic vacancies formed by strong alkaline etching not only promote the conversion of active phases such as NiOOH but also strengthen the stability of the electrode and the binding ability with oxygen so that the material has excellent catalytic properties along with alkaline long-term stability. At a current density of 10 and 100 mA cm-2, NiFe LDH-D1 shows a small voltage of 1.56 and 1.94 V, and at a current density of 200 mA cm-2, it performs well in a 72 h electrochemical water decomposition stability test. The present work demonstrates a simple etching strategy for cation vacancy engineering and provides an example of the construction of efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts with long-term stability.

Indicine cattle, also referred to as zebu (Bos taurus indicus), play a central role in pastoral communities across a wide range of agro-ecosystems, from extremely hot semiarid regions to hot humid tropical regions. However, their adaptive genetic changes following their dispersal into East Asia from the Indian subcontinent have remained poorly documented. Here, we characterize their global genetic diversity using high-quality whole-genome sequencing data from 354 indicine cattle of 57 breeds/populations, including major indicine phylogeographic groups worldwide. We reveal their probable migration into East Asia was along a coastal route rather than inland routes and we detected introgression from other bovine species. Genomic regions carrying morphology-, immune-, and heat-tolerance-related genes underwent divergent selection according to Asian agro-ecologies. We identify distinct sets of loci that contain promising candidate variants for adaptation to hot semi-arid and hot humid tropical ecosystems. Our results indicate that the rapid and successful adaptation of East Asian indicine cattle to hot humid environments was promoted by localized introgression from banteng and/or gaur. Our findings provide insights into the history and environmental adaptation of indicine cattle.

BACKGROUND: With the ageing population in China and an increasing number of the elderly developing chronic illnesses, health services for the elderly have become a major concern. They have significant needs for health information (HI) such as online medical consultation, disease prevention, and medical insurance. OBJECTIVE: To explore the influencing factors and their relative significance in proxy online health information (OHI) seeking among the elderly with chronic illnesses so as to provide a reference for enriching theoretical research and optimizing care for the elderly with chronic illness. METHODS: Twenty-three elderly people with chronic illnesses participated in semi-structured in-depth interviews in this study. The interview transcripts were subject to three levels of coding (open, axial, and selective coding) based on grounded theory to determine the factors influencing proxy OHI seeking among the elderly and to understand how the main categories are interconnected. We used the interpretive structural modeling (ISM) process to analyze the hierarchy and associated pathways among the factors influencing proxy OHI seeking. RESULTS: From our analysis, we identified four main categories affecting proxy HI seeking: the health status, emotional needs, electronic HI literacy, and self-efficacy of the elderly. There were six subcategories that could be further subclassified into direct factors, key factors, and root factors, which constituted the hierarchical model of influencing factors. CONCLUSION: We found that proxy HI seeking among the elderly was directly triggered by self-efficacy and emotional needs following changes in their evaluation of health information and emotional needs, which originates from their perceptions of their health, concerns about their health, and information retrieval capability.

With over 350,000 cases occurring each year, out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) remains a severe public health concern in the United States. The correct and timely use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) has been widely acknowledged as an effective measure to improve the survival rate of OHCA. While general guidelines have been provided by the American Heart Association (AHA) for AED deployment, the lack of detailed instructions hindered the adoption of such guidelines under dynamic scenarios with various time and space distributions. Formulating the AED deployment as a location optimization problem under budget and resource constraints, we proposed an overlayed spatio-temporal optimization (OSTO) method, which accounted for the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of potential OHCAs. To highlight the effectiveness of the proposed model, we applied the proposed method to Washington DC using user-generated anonymized mobile device location data. The results demonstrated that optimization-based planning provided an improved AED coverage level. We further evaluated the effectiveness of adding additional AEDs by analyzing the cost-coverage increment curve. In general, our framework provides a systematic approach for municipalities to integrate inclusive planning and budget-limited efficiency into their final decision-making. Given the high practicality and adaptability of the framework, the OSTO is highly amenable to different healthcare facilities' deployment tasks with flexible demand and resource restraints.

We have developed a simple time-bin phase encoding quantum key distribution system, using the optical injection locking technique. This setup incorporates both the merits of simplicity and stability in encoding, and immunity to channel disturbance. We have demonstrated the field implementation of quantum key distribution over long-distance deployed aerial fiber automatically. During the 70-day field test, we achieved approximately a 1.0 kbps secure key rate with stable performance. Our work takes an important step toward widespread implementation of QKD systems in diverse and complex real-life scenarios.

In this work, we present a new time-bin phase-encoding quantum key distribution (QKD), where the transmitter utilizes an inherently stable Sagnac-type interferometer, and has comparable electrical requirements to existing polarization or phase encoding schemes. This approach does not require intensity calibration and is insensitive to environmental disturbances, making it both flexible and high-performing. We conducted experiments with a compact QKD system to demonstrate the stability and secure key rate performance of the presented scheme. The results show a typical secure key rate of 6.2 kbps@20 dB and 0.4 kbps@30 dB with channel loss emulated by variable optical attenuators. A continuous test of 120-km fiber spool shows a stable quantum bit error rate of the time-bin basis within 0.4%∼0.6% over a consecutive 9-day period without any adjustment. This intrinsically stable and compatible scheme of time-bin phase encoding is extensively applicable in various QKD experiments, including BB84 and measurement-device-independent QKD.

Ovarian cancer is a heterogeneous disease with different molecular phenotypes. We performed molecular typing of ovarian cancer using cell differentiation trajectory analysis and proposed a prognostic risk scoring model. Using the copy number variation provided by inferCNV, we identified malignant tumor cells. Then, ovarian cancer samples were divided into four subtypes based on differentiation-related genes (DRGs). There were significant differences in survival rates, clinical features, tumor microenvironment scores, and the expression levels of ICGs among the subtypes. Based on nine DRGs, a prognostic risk score model was generated (AUC at 1 year: 0.749; 3 years: 0.651). Then we obtained a nomogram of the prognostic variable combination, including risk scores and clinicopathological characteristics, and predicted the 1-, 3- and 5-year overall survival. Finally, we explored some issues of immune escape using the established risk model. Our study demonstrates the significant influence of cell differentiation on predicting prognosis in OV patients and provides new insights for OV treatment and potential immunotherapeutic strategies.

Introduction: Laparoendoscopic single-site inguinal lymphadenectomy (LESS-IL), a minimally invasive technique, has been reported in patients with vulvar or vaginal cancer regarding its safety and feasibility. However, the long-term outcomes, especially oncologic outcomes, are still lacking. We aimed to evaluate the long-term outcomes of LESS-IL to confirm its safety further. Patients and Methods: Data were prospectively collected from patients with vulvar or vaginal cancer who underwent LESS-IL at our institution between July 2018 and June 2021. The patients were followed up for at least 12 months. All procedures were performed according to treatment standards. Short- and long-term complications and oncologic outcomes were analysed. Results: A total of 16 patients undergoing 28 LESS-IL procedures were identified, amongst whom 4 underwent unilateral LESS-IL. The median numbers of excised groin lymph nodes were 9.0 (6.5-11.8) and 10.5 (8.3-12.0) in each left and right groin, respectively. Short-term complications occurred in 4 (25%) patients, including 18.7% lymphocele and 6.3% wound infection. Long-term complications regarding lower-limb lymphoedema appeared in 6 (37.5%) patients. Most short- and long-term complications were Clavien-Dindo 1 or 2, accounting for 90% of all post-operative issues. After a median follow-up of 27 (21.3-35.8) months, only 1 (6.3%) patient had isolated inguinal recurrence at 13 months postoperatively. No local or distant recurrence occurred. Conclusion: Our results suggest that LESS-IL is associated with little incidence of complications and promising oncologic outcomes, further demonstrating the safety and feasibility of the LESS-IL technique in patients requiring IL.

Autism and epilepsy commonly co-occur. Understanding trends in healthcare utilization and in-hospital outcomes amongst patients with autism and epilepsy can help optimize care and reduce costs. We compared hospital outcomes amongst patients with autism and epilepsy to those with epilepsy alone undergoing vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) and resective/disconnective surgery. Differences in discharge status, in-hospital mortality, mean length of stay (LOS), cost and surgical/medical complications were examined. Elective surgical admissions amongst patients with epilepsy alone and co-occurring autism and epilepsy were identified in the 2003-14 National Inpatient Sample (NIS) using previously validated ICD-9-CM case definitions. One patient with co-occurring epilepsy and autism was matched to three epilepsy patients for age, sex and (1) VNS and (2) resective/disconnective surgery. Multinomial logistic regressions were performed to examine the outcomes of interest. Data were collected on: (1) VNS-52 (mean age: 12.79 ± 1.03; 19.27% female) hospital admissions in persons with comorbid autism and epilepsy, 156 (mean age: 12.84 ± 0.71; 19.31% female) matched controls with epilepsy alone; (2) resective/disconnective surgery-113 (mean age: 12.99 ± 0.84; 24.55% female) with comorbid autism and epilepsy, 339 (mean age: 13.37 ± 0.68; 23.86% female) matched controls with epilepsy alone. Compared to patients with epilepsy alone, patients with autism and epilepsy who underwent either surgery showed no differences for in-hospital mortality, discharge status, mean LOS, hospitalization cost, and surgical/medical complications. Our study shows the feasibility and safety of epilepsy VNS and resective surgery in those with ASD do not differ with those with epilepsy alone, contrary to the prevalent safety concerns of epilepsy surgery in patients with ASD.

Background: Neuropathic pain (NP) is a common and severe problem following spinal cord injury (SCI). However, its relationship with functional outcome remains unclear. Methods: A retrospective explorative analysis was performed on SCI patients admitted to a tertiary academic medical center between January 2018 and June 2022. The candidate predictor variables, including demographics, clinical characteristics and complications, were analyzed with logistic and linear regression. Spinal Cord Independence Measure (SCIM) scores at discharge and mean relative functional gain (mRFG) of SCIM were as outcome parameters. Results: A total of 140 SCI patients included for the final analysis. Among them, 44 (31.43%) patients were tetraplegics, and 96 (68.57%) patients were paraplegics; 68 (48.57%) patients developed NP, and 72 (51.43%) patients did not. Logistic and linear regression analyses of SCIM at discharge both showed that NP [OR=3.10, 95% CI (1.29,7.45), P=0.01; unstandardized ß=11.47, 95% CI (4.95,17.99), P<0.01; respectively] was significantly independent predictors for a favorable outcome (SCIM at discharge ≥ 50, logistic regression results) and higher SCIM total score at discharge (linear regression results). Besides, NP [unstandardized ß=15.67, 95% CI (8.94,22.41), P<0.01] was also independently associated with higher mRFG of SCIM scores. Furthermore, the NP group had significantly higher mRFG, SCIM total scores and subscales (self-care, respiration and sphincter management, and mobility) at discharge compared to the non-NP group. However, there were no significant differences in mRFG, SCIM total score or subscales at discharge among the NP subgroups in terms of locations (at level pain, below level pain, and both) or timing of occurrence (within and after one month after SCI). This study also showed that incomplete injury, lumbar-sacral injury level and non-anemia were significantly independent predictors for a favorable outcome, and higher mRFG of SCIM scores (except for non-anemia). Conclusion: NP appears independently associated with better functional recovery in SCI patients, suggesting the bright side of this undesirable complication. These findings may help to alleviate the psychological burden of NP patients and ultimately restore their confidence in rehabilitation.
